Title: As The Candle Burns
Fandom: Trigun
Pairing: None
Word count: 100
Rating: 13 up
Warnings: Manga spoilers, angst

Rem had seen a candle as the best analogy of Plant energy use. "Look at this candle. Though it seems fragile, it could last forever. There's only two ways it can be destroyed, and that is to entirely break it or to light it. If you burn it too often or too long, it will burn up, but you can choose not to burn."

Vash remembered that any time he saw candles. Whether festive or ordinary, they were a stark reminder. The worst were those in reflective glass holders, because he could see his half-blackened hair as the candle burned.

That's very sad. I can see Rem saying that. But Vash might not even want to be a candle that hasn't been burned.

Yeah, it is very sad. It's the problem of mortality: to be immortal means to lose some of the parts of life that mortality makes even more poignant and strong, and adds some of the worst sorrows of mortality (i.e. losing those that one has lost and never seeing them again). It would be like instead of life having peaks and valleys, life had only one long, endless flat plain with deep pits every few miles.

That could easily be part of Knives's issues. I never thought of it that way before, but yes, it could.
